Meta’s Ray-Ban Display gets typing through air gestures in latest update

Meta has rolled out a major software update for its Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, introducing a new “Neural Handwriting” feature that allows users to type messages using air gestures instead of voice commands or a physical keyboard.

The update is one of the biggest feature expansions yet for the Meta Ray-Ban Display platform and highlights Meta’s growing focus on wearable AI computing.

Air-Typing Uses Meta’s Neural Wristband

The new feature works through Meta’s EMG-based Neural Wristband accessory, which reads tiny electrical muscle signals from the user’s wrist and fingers using surface electromyography (sEMG). As users move their fingers in the air or write on a surface, the system converts those gestures into digital text almost instantly.

Instead of speaking messages aloud, users can now silently:

  • Reply to WhatsApp messages
  • Type Instagram DMs
  • Search the web
  • Navigate menus
  • Interact with apps directly through gestures

Meta says the feature is designed to reduce the awkwardness of using voice commands in public places, offices, or quiet environments.

No Camera Tracking Required

Unlike traditional gesture systems that rely heavily on cameras, Meta’s approach focuses on wrist muscle activity. The Neural Wristband detects finger movements before they are fully completed, allowing the glasses to recognize typing gestures with very low latency.

The process works roughly like this:

  1. User moves fingers in the air
  2. Wrist muscles generate electrical impulses
  3. EMG sensors read those signals
  4. The glasses convert them into text or commands

Meta has been developing the technology internally for several years and previously demonstrated early prototypes during its Connect and CES presentations.

New Entertainment and App Features Also Added

The latest update also expands third-party app integration for the Ray-Ban Display glasses. Users can now interact with services like:

  • Spotify
  • Audible
  • Disney+
  • ESPN

Meta additionally introduced a new “Display Recording” feature that combines:

  • In-display overlays
  • Camera footage
  • Microphone audio

into a single shareable video clip captured directly from the glasses.

Meta Intensifies Smart Glasses Competition

The update arrives as competition in the smart glasses market rapidly intensifies. Reports suggest Samsung and Google are preparing their own Android XR-powered smart glasses platforms, while Apple is also reportedly developing AI-focused wearable devices.

Meta appears to be moving aggressively to strengthen its ecosystem advantage before competing products launch globally. The company has already expanded retail demo experiences for its wearable products across additional stores in the United States.

Availability

The new Neural Handwriting feature is rolling out through a software update for existing Meta Ray-Ban Display users. However, users will still need the separate Neural Wristband accessory to use air-typing functionality.

Meta has not yet confirmed international pricing or wider retail availability details for the wristband accessory.
