Google appears to be preparing one of the most requested upgrades for Android passkey users — the ability to import and export passkeys between Google Password Manager and third-party password managers.
The upcoming feature was recently discovered inside hidden Google Password Manager settings on Android, suggesting that Google is actively working on improving passkey portability across different ecosystems and apps.
Android May Finally Get Easier Passkey Transfers
Currently, Android users can sync passkeys across their own Google devices through Google Password Manager, but transferring those passkeys to another password manager has been a major limitation. Users switching to services like Bitwarden, 1Password, or Dashlane often need to manually recreate passkeys on every website.
That may soon change.
According to recent reports, Google Password Manager is testing new:
- “Import passwords & passkeys”
- “Export passwords & passkeys”
options inside Android settings.
The feature reportedly uses the FIDO Alliance’s Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), a newer industry standard designed to securely transfer passkeys and passwords between password managers without exposing sensitive data.
Why This Matters
Passkeys are becoming increasingly important as tech companies push passwordless authentication. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys use cryptographic authentication tied to your device and biometrics, making them far more resistant to phishing attacks.
However, one of the biggest criticisms of passkeys has been ecosystem lock-in.
For example:
- Google Password Manager users struggled moving to iCloud Keychain or Bitwarden
- Apple users recently received passkey transfer tools in iOS 26 and macOS 26
- Android users still lacked a smooth migration process
The new import/export functionality could finally make Android’s passkey ecosystem far more flexible and user-friendly.
Google Play Services Update Already Mentions It
The feature now appears to be progressing beyond early testing. Reports indicate that Google officially added support for importing and exporting passwords and passkeys through Google Play Services version 26.21 released in early June.
Android Authority previously activated hidden interface elements showing the feature already functioning internally with supported password managers like Bitwarden.
Google is also reportedly adding security protections that can block exports to password managers that fail to meet certain security standards. One warning message reportedly states:
“Export blocked for your protection.”
Google’s Bigger Passkey Push
Google has been heavily promoting passkeys over the past two years. According to Google, passkeys authenticated users more than a billion times across over 400 million accounts within their first year.
Google Password Manager is already integrated deeply into Android and Chrome, where it serves as the default passkey provider on many Android devices.
The addition of passkey portability could help Google accelerate wider adoption by reducing concerns about being locked into a single ecosystem.
Availability
Google has not officially announced a public rollout date yet. The feature currently appears to be in testing and hidden behind unfinished interface elements on some Android builds.
However, with references already appearing in recent Play Services updates, broader rollout may not be far away.
