The recently-concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 did not have the same impact on Indian telecom companies as the IPL 2023. While the World Cup boosted mobile data usage by over 4% sequentially for Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea, it only resulted in a modest 1% revenue growth. This is because consumers tend to have unused data, making it unlikely for them to upgrade to higher value plans. In contrast, the IPL 2023 significantly increased data usage levels in the fiscal first quarter for telcos, with Reliance Jio and Airtel reporting sequential growth in average monthly data usage per user.
