NEW DELHI: The Wynncom Y50 is an allrounder and is almost like a Blackberry clone.

The Blackberry touch starts with the design. The Y50 looks like a combination of the Javelin and Gemini (Blackberry models). The back is made of plastic and has a metallic feel — it’s very sleek and lightweight.

Regarding the keypad, the keys are nicely spaced, are pretty ergonomic and facilitates fast typing. But the keypad could have been better. However, the space bar is badly designed and has to be pressed rather oddly to elicit a response.

Typing an SMS may be a breeze only if you decide not to make too many mistakes as there is no delete button to rectify your mistakes. Every time you have to erase something, you have to press the ‘clear’ option, which is quite a task. The addition of the direction keys is a good idea, especially if the trackball fails. While having direction keys is a good idea, we fail to understand its actual use as the phone has a trackball for navigation.

The screen is bright at 2.4 inches. The homescreen menu of the Y50 looks exactly like the Blackberry OS — there are icons for messages, browser and contacts. The menus are self-explanatory. It has got the standard apps which are available in most of the phones of this price range.

Social networking is taken care of with built-in apps for Facebook, eBuddy, Nimbuzz & Snaptu. The phone also has some apps in its ‘extra’ section like a Body Mass Index, an eBook Reader, Stopwatch and also comes with a mobile tracking software. You can browse the internet via Opera Mini.

Media support is provided by a 2 megapixel back camera, video recording, music & video playback. The camera quality is quite average but it does take good pictures indoors. The phone has FM radio which can record FM at scheduled times.

The audio quality is pretty good. However, the headphone quality is very low and it will hurt your ears the minute you put them on. It would be more convenient to have the headphone jack on top of the phone and not on the right side. Should you buy this phone?

Go ahead, why not. It’s not got anything significantly different from any other phone in its category, but it’s not a bad deal either. It’s a good deal in the Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 range. The Wynncom Y50 is available for Rs 5,400.
