MIPS Technologies, a China-based CPU provider for mobile multimedia applications, has announced the availability of the world’s first tablet running on the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), Novo 7.
Priced under $100, the tablet is powered by 1GHz single core MIPS-based XBurst CPU with Vivante GC860 GPU core.
According to Andy Rubin, senior vice president of mobile at Google, “Low cost, high performance tablets are a big win for mobile consumers and a strong illustration of how Android’s openness drives innovation and competition for the benefit of consumers around the world.”
Sporting a 7-inch capacitive multitouch screen, the tablet will support Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, USB 2.0, HDMI 1.3 and microSD. The tablet will also offer support for 3D graphics with the Vivante GC860 GPU, 1080p video decoding and dual front/rear cameras. The company also plans to launch the tablet in 8 and 9-inch versions.
Currently, the tablet is available in China and online through Ainol Electronics Co Ltd. It will be available in the US and other geographies in the coming months under brands from companies including Leader International Inc and OMG Electronics Ltd.
